bluetooth is not running ... failed

how do I get my bluetooth running?
i have tried:
root@kali:~# aptitude install bluetooth
looking through forums, i found
root@kali:~# echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/bluetooth_enable
but this didn't work either.
when i do: service bluetooth status
i get the message: bluetooth is not running... failed

i know i am missing a rookie step which i can not find in the forums. can someone please point it out to me?
