What to encrypt to stay safe.

Hello, I would like encrypt my filesystem with LUKS but I have noticed that encrypting entire system slows system and stress CPU to maximum, I am using 512 gb ocz vector SSD on sata 6gbps and after full encryption system slowed down from ~500MB/s to ~100MB/s. Could some one give me an advice what parts of system I could encrypt to prevent from external view of log files etc ? I am thinking of encrypting entire /var partition and some files like bash history etc but what else might be encrypted to prevent from identifying what activities were done on system? Thanks

Have you considered anything that is AES based if your processor supports AES instructions....if not...why don't you consider a co-processor for the encryption you plan on using...
they are available as express cards or whatever...
hardware acceleration for encryption does really make a difference.. my i3 core does 200MB/s for AES without hardware support...I am also assuming you setup is rather old..
