First login fails

I've installed Kali successfully. I'm not able to login (after selecting 'Other...' which was only option given: I expected to see my Username). Details are:
Kali version 1.0.5
Ubuntu Precise 64 bit
Kali installation using Virtualbox 4.3.6
Username was same as supplied in installation.
Forgot if install requested password to be used: so I used password that I would have supplied if asked
Error message: Authentication failure
Tried passwords such as kali & password with no success

I've searched Documentation without success. Is there a special password for first time login?

I've tried both my user name & root, with toor. Both gave Authentication Failure
PS I did the Graphical Install, not a Live option

My mistake: I must have miskeyed root (for the user name). Now OK.
