Question Kali Live USB - Save preferences and installed packages between boots

I just installed Kali on a USB-stick using the dd command. Is there a way to save system preferences/settings and installed packages between boots? It's really annoying having to reconfigure everything everytime I reboot. (I tried following a tutorial that said you should create a partition called "persistance" and every time you boot you hit tab in the boot menu and type "persistance". This does work for saving downloaded files but a package I installed didn't get saved and neither did my system settings, like keyboard layout and wallpaper.)
