getting information from a polling WiFi device

I watched a little video where someone talked about the information that can be gained from a device polling for a WiFi connection such as a phone with WiFi left turned on. I can't find how to get this information. Is there a tool in Kali that can get this out of a polling device or can someone point me in the right direction? All I can find is how to crack WiFi passwords

    Thanks
    Adam

Network sniffers like Wireshark attached to your promiscuous WiFi card will get you started.

If it smells like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck; then it probably is a duck.

Check out beacon frames and probe request/response frames.
