Red face Kali 1.0.7 installation error

    Hello Kali Community,

I just recently downloaded and made a USB installer with Kali 1.0.7 ISO so I can format my computer. I'd like to hopefully, use the whole disk for the installation. What's on it is Ubuntu, my main OS. Nothing else is installed on the HDD, Ubuntu uses all the space.

When I am in the installation process, after it ask's me the basic settings like language, keyboard, the installer then tries to detect hardware to find CD-ROM drivers. After a moment, it fails and gives an error with the following message: "Error Reading Release File".

I searched the forums, but posts regarding this are really old, and the replies weren't really that helpful. I've googled, but nothing certain really seems to come up as to the cause or fix for this.

    I am running a Lenovo G480 intel core i3, 6GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Any help regarding this will be really appreciated.

Thank you all for your time.

Sounds like a bad download of Kali.
Try checking the SHA1 to see if that matches. Else re-download Kali Linux (Would suggest torrents over HTTP).

Thank you for the swift reply g0tmi1k. I indeed checked the hash and it matched. The Kali I have here is a direct download from the website's servers. I will give your recommendation a try. If anything else pops up, or if this happens again, I will write back. Once more, thank you very much for your time and advice.

Hey g0tmi1k, I tried what you told me. I triple checked the sum and I downloaded it through torrent like you mentioned. Sad to say, I still got the same error message: "Error Reading Release File". I made a Live USB, burned a DVD, and even tried a network installation. This is why I took so long to reply. All of them give me the same message. The Live USB portion works properly, everything loads up with out issue on every single boot device I've made. What should I do now? The Kali ISO's are all real and their checks all respectively match. I have made many boot devices in the past, but is there a program I should be using specifically? Would it be my computer's hardware?

    Thanks again for your time.

Which ISO are you using? x86/x64? Mini/Full?
    What is the SHA1?

Did you verify the DVD burn afterwards? A lot of programs have this option.
What speed did you burn it at?

Does the network and DVD hang in the same place?

The guide/way that we recommend to install, can be found here: http://docs.kali.org/installation

Guessing that you are trying to do a 'real'/bare metal install on the device - not using virtual machines?

So them all give error messages, but the USB still boots? Whereas the other two do not?

I am using the full version of Kali Linux 64 bit ISO.
    The SHA1 sum is: 6deb789fa05d84cd335d5afb86983119784dd978

I have made many boot devices in the past and can say with certainty the process of making them is not the cause. All of them work properly, all of them check for CD-ROM drivers during installation and always stops at the error message with "Error Reading Release File".

Was worded incorrectly, and I see where you are confused, but they all work, and they all hang at the same exact point in the installation.

Also, you are correct in assuming that I'd like to do a complete metal installation. I am not running a VM, I'd like to have Kali running as my main OS replacing Ubuntu.
