Need Live CD with USB Persistence Help

My Hard Drive is messed up and I have seen it done just not sure how to do it with Kali. What I want to do is use the Live CD and have everything saved to the USB pen drive. Is it possible with this version of linux. I know you can have it boot with usb but i have a 4GB usb and want to just use it for saveing everything i do in the live cd. like updateing or adding new programs. Please help in any way possible.
Update- I have tried partitioning my usb with ext3 and labeling it casper-rw and adding persistant to the live boot menu with tab at start of the live cd still nothing saves. Found a link to what i want to do still doesnt help. But heres the link so you know what i want to do. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence
