How NOT to break my installation? (repository issues)

    Hi. I have a problem.
I have read the instructions in the Repository Issues sticky thread and in several other sites and I just keep messing up my installation.
My Sources.list looks EXACTLY like this:

    Code:
    #

    # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 _Kali_ - Official Snapshot i386 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20140108-18:08]/ kali contrib main non-free

    #deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 _Kali_ - Official Snapshot i386 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20140108-18:08]/ kali contrib main non-free

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    ## Security updates
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
But after I do the clean, update and upgrade

and reset, it just doesn't start and I have to install everything all over again.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

After several tries I did the safe-upgrade instead of the full-upgrade but how do I know if my linux will start next time I turn on the pc if I full upgrade?

I have Kali Linux 1.0 and I want to upgrade to 1.6

    Thanks

How are you using Kali? USB or HDD or VM?
From the sounds of it, you are doing a live boot via USB. If this is the case, you may wish to add on persistence ~ http://docs.kali.org/installation/ka...sb-persistence

You can't upate to 1.6 (think you mean 1.0.6), as 1.0.8 is now out.

I have it installed in my HDD all in one partition.

Yes. That's what I meant. Sorry.
