I found kali 1.0.9 on one of the kali mirrors but the main download page has only 1.0.8.

Has 1.0.9 been released or have I found test release?

Of course I downloaded it

The file matches the SHA1SUM provided in the same directory. I was planning to put it in a KVM after lunch and see how it goes.

It is unique from 1.0.8 in name and size so I don't believe it's a typo

Not the site I used, but the SHA1SUMs match - it must be 'released'.

It's a beta release. Its NOT the final 1.0.9 (I know its missing at least one package that needs to be included).
Once its ready, it will be on the homepage.

In short, 1.0.8 added support for UEFI (and some tool updates). It was only just released on 2014-07-23.
1.0.9 will pretty much only add more hardware support during install.
