Kali 1.0.8 installation doesn't start

Hi, and thanks for being here.

I'm asking for help since simple though the solution may be,
I cannot find proper words to google out a solution,
for so "basic" a problem.

On a Vaio Fit with Windows 8 installed,
Kali Linux 1.0.8 64-bit ISO, burned on a DVD for HDD installation,
doesn' t start.

A black screen
with a steady underscore at the top-left is all that I get.
It hangs for minutes so I have to force shutdown.

- Fast Boot is disabled
- Secure Boot is disabled
- Boot from DVD has been given priority

Can't put basic output of commands,
not having a prompt to issue them.

Tests I have ran so far:
- A DVD with Debian 7.5 burned in the same way starts normally,
but I'd rather have Kali installed.
- Kali Linux 1.0.7 64-bit ISO DVD doesn't start either
- Kali Linux 1.0.8 64-bit ISO imaged upon a USB stick
with Win32 Disk Imager doesn't start either; just a black screen.

There are 9 partitions counting UEFIs, SWAPs, Vaio Care and so on,
but here shouldn't be a problem for I'm not even getting near
to where I choose a partition to install Kali to.

Is it just a test to establish whether I am skillful enough to wield Kali?

By fortune, I have relatively SOLVED the matter.

Yesterday I tried again with what I had,
a DVD iso and an imaged USB stick with Kali 1.0.8,
neither of which would boot.

After repeating almost the same operations few times,
the USB image managed to boot,
without graphic installer option.
Nor there was the dragon's silhouette, yet.

Yet, being long since I had any hope,
the installation process caught me
without a partition to endow Kali with,
and I had to boot Window to shrink volumes.

After that I faced the same problem,
no Kali installer boot.

Unreasonable as it seems,
the trick that worked thrice is the following:
- restart with DVD ISO, let it run idlessly
until the DVD drive stops to bother;
- eject and re-insert the DVD
without shutting down, wait again;
- shut-down, plug in USB image
and, when turning on, eject the DVD,
to see Kali installer appear after the manner
of the cheat-codes of the games of old..

What happens I cannot yet guess,
though now Kali should be installed.
Should, because Grub installation failed
and so I cannot yet access the new OS.

Thanks anyway.
Now to find a way to install Grub.

I am having the same exact issue. However, After reading your post about how you figured out how to have the grub actually find the OS. I have tried your steps but to no avail :/. I had Kali recently installed on my machine but for some odd reason it will not install correctly again even though I have formatted the HD and tried installating Kali 3 times already and right now im using the Bootable usb.

There is a decision! Establish Kali 1.0.6. Then enter in the terminal apt-get update & apt-get dist-upgrade. At me earned!

I think that I found out what the issue is!!

After hours of messing around on here here is what I did and for some ungodly reason this worked for me.. Don't ask me how or why but it just worked finally.

1.Created USB with the 1.0.8 86_64 iso with Win32 Disk Imager
2.Installed Kali with default settings and default installation GUIDED
3.After installation after GRUB it was still black screening
4.I used another Windows machine with the USB that I created with Win32 Disk Imager and ran the program Unetbootin
5.I had a Backbox iso (newest one) and I used the same USB and wrote to the USB
6.Unetbootin installed the correct files that was needed in order for grub to look at the other partitions.
7.Reinserted USB into blanked out machine that was awaiting Kali installation
8.Ran the installation completely again same default guided installation
9.Rebooted machine
10.Took out USB
11.Pressed enter while in GRUB and selected Kali 3.14amd86_64
12.And to my amazement it loaded all the way without any issues!!

As I said... this worked for me some miracle way but hopefully this works for you as well

Atleast you got it too start

I created both a bootable Kali dvd and bootable Kali usb, but where Ubuntu is eager to boot from both devices, Kali does not.
I disabled my CRM // fast boot // Secure boot // enabled boot from USB and DVD..
I get a black screen on Kali
I tried booting on my other machines and did not had any issues at all booting from DVD (USB gives a problem as well; can it be it is a 64 GB usb FD?)

What am I missing?

I know that when trying to find a solution for getting 1.0.8 to install correctly and work out of the box is a pain but are you able to at least boot where you get the grub menu? If so then you might want to check your video settings and see if it is compatiable or not. Here are some possible solutions that you might consider trying:

Install a earlier version of Kali Linux and upgrade the kernel via terminal as suggested above by Kamahiro

Check within grub menu the video settings:
-When you get to the GRUB menu press the up or down arrow key so it doesnt auto load into whatever it is that you may have
-Highlight over the Kali selection
-Press "e" for edit
- I know that throughout Linux Mint and Ubuntu communities here is an article I was reading to figure out what the issue may have been: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/842

-The last thing that I could think of was what I already suggested in the post with Unetbootin and Win32 Disk Creator.

im having the same problem, but where to find an earlier version of kali? also i cant find secure boot and fast boot in my bios. using a netbook asus eee. i dont know if it has the option to change the secureboot. where is it normally stalled?

I am having the same problem with version 1.0.9 too, is there a way to download a earlier working version? I recall 1.0.6 working fine for me a couple months ago but I sadly deleted this ISO...

It seems to me you have a video issue..I recommend to disable modeset at grub menu using "e" key to enter edit mode and disable modeset...

thx for the nice words and heads up. I need it. I recently started working with 1.09 but atm.. I am affraid I can't even get it to mount. Not only my laptop but also my other computers around refuse to work.
Recently I got 1.08 to install which looks fine. Of course I was confronted with a stupid windowsbootmgr and I have no idea how to either disable that or, what lots of ppl say, use efibootmgr / rEFFind. As you found out I m quite a Linux / Kali newbie. I am stuck in the time when we had 'normall' bios options with normall boot options to CD / USB. I must be getting really old
Do you have any idea how to get 1.08 to boot? Did you replace the windowsbootmgr (in the bios) with another one and if so..how.

What I basicly need is a working installation of Linux (I got it working on 1.08) and a bootmanager which is capable to boot another OS than Windows 8.1. I never past the bootmanager problem.

Actually at that time
I didn't have any menu whatsoever,
so issuing instructions was not an option.
Nothing would happen.

Still,
with the implausible technique I described above
I completed the installation of Kali 1.0.8.

Now I cannot boot Kali,
for "Grub-efi" package failed to install,
maybe because I have
no Internet connection at home.

Booting Kali 1.0.8 manually,
I get warnings like:

- /bin/ssh: can't access tty;
- job control turned off (initramsf)
- target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
- can't read /etc/stab
- mount /dev on /root/dev failed

So it may be I have to edit something, like fstab?

Or is it the same problem Archer described
just above, and it is windowsbootmgr?

Still, grub was not installed for certain,
so I need to boot Kali at least once
and then reinstall grub, or rEFInd,

Not having Internet, after every try
I have to wait next day going back in town
and check again from a tablet,
so a Live Kali is becoming
the most feasible option.

@ Qesuada157- There should be an option with newer model PCs that you can turn off secure boot and enable legacy boot for USB and what not. If I remember correctly under the Security Tab in the BIOS is where you are able to turn off that pesky Secure Boot option. From what I have been reading F2 is the key to get into your BIOS and there you should be able to change the settings for Kali to boot up and then you can install.

Well to be honest I actually blew away my Windows OS on my machine and now I only have Kali on my machine. In the past I have used the distro's Live USB and booted from USB. From there I mounted the sda and then reinstalled GRUB over the whole HD and that worked for me. make sure when you have your stuff mounted to install osprober as well since that will help identify within GRUB that there is another OS on your machine.

Since you didnt see a grub menu I would reccomend trying to reinstall the GRUB via your LIVE disk or USB and seeing if that solves your issue here is the link that can help you https://forums.kali.org/showthread.p...With-Windows-7 and https://forums.kali.org/archive/index.php/t-18931.html both of those look that they can help you

I have the same problem the best version of kali to set up is 1.6.0 i download that version and work good lest update to see if get the same problem.
