Rapid7 is in charge of bundling up the updates on Kali. They will commit the updates to the repo (they aim todo it once a week - around Wednesday/Thursday).
Note, doing msfupdate, is the same as doing apt-get update; apt-get install metasploit-framework (when on Kali).
Because its not coming from git, its not 'bleeding edge'. So the idea is, its slightly more "stable" =).
If they haven't pushed out an update, it will be for a good reason.
Code:root@kali ~$ date Sun Sep 14 09:08:27 BST 2014 root@kali ~$ msfupdate [*] [*] Attempting to update the Metasploit Framework... [*] [*] Checking for updates via the APT repository [*] Note: expect weekly(ish) updates using this method [*] No updates available root@kali ~$ msfconsole -v Framework Version: 4.10.0-2014082101 root@kali ~$
