Unfortunately, the Nexus 7 (2012) is the only one whose internal wifi is capable of monitor mode. The Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) don't have the monitor mode in the driver. The only way it would ever work is if Qualcomm released new drivers with monitor mode.
You are, however, already able to use monitor mode on the N7 (2012). Its internal wifi card is wlan0.

    Only Nexus 7 2012

No hope for internal WiFi cards on Nexus 5 and Nexus 7(2013). Only supported WiFi chipset is old Broadcom chipset, BCM4330. Newer BCM4339 does not support bcmon and no devleopment in official blog.

As far as I know, the BCmon-monitormode does not work inside the kali chroot, which makes it kinda useless in the context of nethunter. This is why 2012 nexus 7 owners among others are encouraged to get their hands on an external wifi usb device.

Googling the phone's name + wifi chipset tends to work, if that fails just take a look at a teardown and you should be able to identify the chip by markings.
In your case, I believe that the Motorola Droid uses a Texas Instruments one.
