    Working hardware

    Hey Everyone,

    I have Lenovo X230 laptop with OCZ Vertex 3 250G SSD drive, 4G RAM and Intel pro abgn wireless with ASUS USB-N13 abgn packet injection wifi card. This system is my pentesting unit that I had BT5 R3 dual booting with Win 7. Both OS were 64bit. I replaced the BT5 R3 with Kali by deleting the BT5 R3 partition and formating to become my root with ext4 filesystem. Once completed and rebooted the boot loader menu showed both OS. Booted into Kali and tested wireless using the internal intel and it was already working. Next plug in USB N13 and drivers autoloaded. Tested injection and works too. Unlike BT5 R3 when I shutdown and power back up kali actually remembers my wifi connection and auto connects. So far this Linux OS has been the best out of the box and with all the tools to pentest. The only item I did not test was the camera that's built into the laptop. I will test and post back to this thread.

    If anyone want a nice size hardware that works then look into the lenovo x230 and get ASUS USB-N13 adapter for wireless pentesting.

    Great to hear I'm not the only one who had a good first try with Kali, I have a HP Envy m6 laptop and so far Kali has surpassed everything hardware wise as everything worked right out of the box. Same with you my wireless had worked seemlessly and I do have good news on the webcam that it does work with my laptop. I tested it with Skype and it worked perfectly and so did the built in mic. Audio was no problem ether. One thing I do praise Kali for surpassing Backtrack is I am actually able to dim my screen while in BT it didn't work. All of my USB 3.0 slots work as well along with a really accurate battery meter. I honestly told one of my friends today while I was testing it out that if I had a choice to use Kali as my default boot Linux Distro and use it for everyday use I would as it runs everything flawlessly but alas its ment for pentesting but its just so perfect. I honestly don't like Windows 8 at all and I feel more at home on Linux anyways expecially Debian.

    i had minor problems on BT5r3 regarding the kernel which was not able to handle the Intel HD4000 Card. After installing Kali everything was working out of the box except NVIDIA drivers.

    Nice. The screen dim function on the lenovo works. I believe this lenovo hardware was actually design to work with Linux and or Windows. When I check IBM drivers site it has linux drivers for this laptop, which is pretty cool to know. Yes I agree Windows is such a pain.

    I have installed Kali Linux on my Dell XPS15z (l511z) and all works very good by default, the only fix that I need was set "acpi_background=vendor" as Kernel boot parameter and install Bumblebee for the optimus feature of my graphics cards.

    ASUS G75VW, Core i7-3610QM @ 2.30GHz, 16GB Samsung DDR3, nVidia 660M - 2GB

    Most everything works well OOTB. Backlight controls didn't work (neither keys nor in system settings) with nouveau driver or with nVidia driver installed using instructions in Samiux's post above.

    Backlight [FIX]/workaround:
    1. Installed nVidia drivers per Samiux
    2. first reboot had to kill gdm3 as it didn't load properly... ran nvidia-xconfig, restarted gdm3 service manually and it came up fine
    3. [backlight fix] add the following line to your "Device" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (make a backup first!!)
    Code:
     Option         "registryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
    4. reboot and see workaround
    5. [WORKAROUND] keys don't work when the gdm loads... you have to suspend (close screen, fn+F1...) then resume. Once resumed the fn+F5, fn+F6 keys work to change backlight brightness.

    late 2012 macbook Air, live boot works 100%. internal wifi now supports injection, somehow. It never did on BT.

    Thinkpad T420: Flawless.
    Thinkpad X230: Flawless.
    Thinkpad X130e: Live boot works 100%. Installer crashes every single attempt. No diagnostic output to speak of to even try cracking it.
    Asus Eee original old school Atom: 99%. occasional rendering glitches in X.

    @e46Dave : i just got received my new laptop -x230. I tried to boot kali on vmware under win7 (host). Kernel panic.
    I tried to boot the live cd, i'm able to boot into kali linux. Any idea what could have gone wrong?
    i tried both Kali 32 bit and 64 bit as well, both failed to boot with kernel panic in vmware.
    sigh~
