apt-get dist-upgrade == no sound? (upgrading from kali 1.0.6)

I did an distribution upgrade from kali 1.0.6
#apt-get dist-upgrade
and realise there were no sound...tried the following:
1. check to see if the sound device is being detected
#lspci (Yes)

2. Check to see if the sound drivers for this device is installed
#lsmod

3. use "modprobe" command to manually probe for all drivers found under lsmod list

After all of the above i tried to remove pulseaudio which resulted in most important lib modules being remove including network manager. I am now contemplating to do a full re-installation of kali 1.0.6 and DO NOT UPGRADE....
Is there anyone encountering this problem when uprgading that can shed some light on the solution for other users upgrading?

Did you check the audio output in system setting?
Just a thought....

yep..i check to see if the audio is mutted on the gnome panel and i checked in the system settings-->sound..to see if there are any sound device and volume option available....luckily i backed up all my files by remotely accessing the linux OS from Windows...(that was a relief)..

hmmm...i am thinking to download kali 1.0.9 and disk imaged it to a usb flash then install...if the sound drivers are working i supposed it could be the upgrade process....

Also before the upgrade..i configure my sources.list files by commenting out all my debian wheezy repositories
#leafpad /etc/apt/sources.lst
#apt-get update
This was just to ensure that all upgraded modules are being pulled from kali linux repos only....
