What am I doing wrong here, wont run the disk

Im trying to run it as a vm on virtual box and when i start it and add the device i get this message:
Failed to open the optical disk file /home/chritian/Downloads/kali-linux-1.0.9a-amd64.iso.

Could not get the storage format of the medium '/home/chritian/Downloads/kali-linux-1.0.9a-amd64.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

ditto, but also if i try to install the x64 iso into a vmware virtual machine i get a display, booting from PXE then fails..
dont know if its something im doing or is it a fault with the iso file.

just re-downloaded the iso file AGAIN. rechecked keys etc. all passed.
same problem again, boot from cdrom fails. then tries to PXE boot, which also fails.
screen capture wont upload.
