problem choosing the "Live (686-pae) boot from live USB....

Brand new to this OS, and the live boot from USB option, so please bear with me here.

I installed Kali to my USB drive, and everything appeared to go fine. However, when the boot menu appears, if I choose the "Live (686-pae) option, it begins the boot process, but soon hangs in a loop with the screen cycling red, green, blue, white, black, over and over again. I have to depress and hold down the power button to power off the laptop.

Now, if I choose the "Live (686-pae failsafe)" option everything proceeds fine and I boot into the desktop.

Is this a graphics card issue? (I have an nVidia 8700GT graphics card) And what do I need to do to fix it?

Apologies for being such a noob, but my initial searches of this forum didn't yield any answers...

    EDIT:

Been doing some research, and have seen some advocating blacklisting the noveau driver, and others that recommend updating the nVidia drivers. But none of these "fixes" seem to address using the Live USB boot option.

So, any help here would be greatly appreciated.
