Kali 1.09 32 bit update failing

I have a 32 bit Kali 1.09 VM under VirtualBox (which I'm posting from now) that fails updating with this error:

Failed to process request

E: Error http://http.kali.org/kali/ kali/main kali-linux i386 1.55.2
404 Not Found

I had this happen on my Mini 1012 with 1.07-32bit install recently where I repeatedly got the same error, yet when I tried the update yesterday it finally worked (I have 1.07-64 installed in a separate partition on this laptop but haven't had this issue).

How do I correct this issue?

As an educated guess, what happens if you add google's nameserver at 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolv.conf and retry?
