I haven't used them in Kali, but since it's based on Debian and GNOME 3 you may install them as you would in any other Debian-based distro (Debian itself, Ubuntu, Mint, etc.).

mmm..i ""THINK"" the problem is related to your "old/obsolete" repository ... but i'm not expert ... maybe someone else can advise ..the correct procedure to update them along with an upgrade of the distro !!!
i Don't Know if apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade ..solved your issue..
good luck
tried that already same issues
I just made a quick experiment with Conky. This fits your image of "Screenlets" quite well:

This is just a really simple setup. Combinig it with shell scripts one could also be able to display network traffic or such right on the desktop.
For me, dmesg, auth.log and some system information were sufficient.
Kali also has conky in its repositories. Only optional programm you might want to add is Conky-Manager, for easier manipulation of size and location.
You're missing the standard repositories in Kali Linux - http://docs.kali.org/general-use/kal...t-repositories
Reading the installation docs is always recommended.
