    Kali and newer GPU's

    First off I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, a quick search did not find what I was looking for, if this is the case a link to the topic would be appreciated. Also I hope this is the right place.

    I have been running Kali for awhile on my laptop via VirtualBox or off of USB. My laptop has a i7-3610QM running at 2.30GHz with 16gigs of RAM which handles most aspects of hacking/pentesting decently with the exception of password cracking.

    I am seriously considering building a desktop specifically for the purpose of practicing my skills. Most likely will include an AMD processor and as much RAM as I can. That brings me to the question, I have been considering running an AMD based GPU. This will not be a gaming machine in the sense of playing games, what I am looking for is a card that can do the operations/calculations. Is there any recommendations of cards that run well with Kali without too much effort?

    AMD is no longer better than Nvidia. I'd highly recommend you pick up a GTX 980 if you can afford it. R9 290X if you can't. Used 7970 if you can't afford that, either.

    Thanks for the input, I had thought about getting a new laptop probably along the line of a http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops...w-series/w540/ with the Quadro K2100M graphics. Pricing the way I had it specd got me thinking could do a desktop cheaper, but still really like the mobility of a laptop.

    @tnraines

    that's the problem with lappys, they balance power with battery life and there are heat issues also. Cracking an 8 character word is about 4hrs(if the user input was right, if not you have to re-do the process) which is more than acceptable. 10 chars set though may take days. Anything above that, like a 12 chars set and up, would be unthinkable. It's like hunting rinos with a glock, it is possible though not recommended :S
