Amazon EC2 internal and external IP addresses

I have created an instance of Kali Linux in Amazon EC2. I have done a full install and updated and upgraded it.

The machine has an external IP address of 54-xx-xx-xx and an internal IP address of 174-xx-xx-xx. I have editted the Security Group settings to what I think they should be and I have pinged 54-xx-xx-xx from my laptop and that replies back.

I have gone to test an exploit (use exploit/multi/handler; set LHOST 54-xx-xx-xx; set PORT 80) but it listens on the internal IP of 174-xx-xx-xx instead of the external 54-xx-xx-xx.

    Help please!
