I tried to apt-get dist-upgrade and now when I boot into kali I receive the option to boot from the 2 kernels (and their respective recovery modes)
Is there any way to get rid of the old kernel upon boot?

Something like this would work: http://www.garron.me/en/go2linux/cle...ages-grub.html
Still recommend to backup your work before you do it.
