Kali Linux terminal no internet access

Hi i am new in Kali Linux, i installed kali Linux to vmware workstation version 11 and am unable to update the kali via terminal "apt-get update" or "upgrade",could not access internet. however when the Iceweasel web browser is in used the internet is accessible. please assist

What is the output you get when running "apt-get update" and/or "apt-get upgrade"?
