question between Radeon R9 280x and Radeon HD 7970

Going off the info from http://golubev.com/gpuest.htm the 7970 number wise beats the 280x. My thinking is why shouldn't I just go find a used 7970 versus drop the money on a 280x?

I do not have the money for the 290 or 290x, but want a decent card any other suggestions?

I have wondered about something but have never found a definitive answer. In order to use multiple AMD Radeon GPUs simultaneously in CrossfireX (or nVidia GeForce in SLI presumably - I haven't used multiple GeForce cards personally), there must be an application profile that allows for both cards to be used at once.

How is this addressed by programs such as crypto or other cracking type applications that would benefit from the use of multiple GPUs?
