New to Kali/Security. Best tutorials? Free or paid.

    Hello all,

I'd like to take a minute to explain where I'm currently at. I've been in IT for a little over a year. At my current company, they are in serious need of people for the SOC. I wanted to get into Security, and they gave me the oppurtunity. So I've been reviewing Security+ info and revisiting networking since I've been working mainly on servers. As a side at home thing, I really want to learn Kali. I can't seem to find any solid videos for beginners. I was hoping someone here could help me out.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Welcome to the deep end of the pool, Mike!

Kali is a Debian based/audit compliant Linux Distro with a very nice collection of Pentetration Testing tool sets. I say this meaning, there is not very much to learn which is specific to Kali if you are decently familiar with Debian (or other Linux Distros). Everything is done in Kali exactly how it should be, and exactly how you would expect it to be on any Debian OS'd machine. So looking on Youtube will not give you great reward; you will mostly find simple Kali installation "how-to's" and the like. The provided toolset is what you will find more "homebrew" tutorials for. Metasploit,Beef,Burp Suite,OpenVAS,SQLmap, Maltego, AirCrack-ng, etc. (the complete list is here: http://tools.kali.org/tools-listing)

Metasploit Unleashed is a free online course using Kali, and may be a good example of the sort of thing you are looking for to get started.

"This is a free online course and if you enjoy it and find it useful, we ask that you make a donation to the HFC (Hackers For Charity), $9.00 will feed a child for a month, so any contribution is welcome. We hope you enjoy this course as much as we enjoyed making it."

A nice resource to add to your Iceweasel or Firefox browser is "The Open Penetration Testing Bookmarks Collection".

The Open Penetration Testing Bookmarks Collection

...is just that, a collection of handy bookmarks I initially collected that aid me in my day to day work or I find in the course of research. They are not all inclusive and some sections need to be parsed but they are all good reference materials. I find having this Hackery folder in Firefox an easy way to reference syntax, tricks, methods, and generally facilitate and organize research.

Opening it up to everyone will facilitate a knowledge transfer. Hopefully the initial set will grow and expand.

SecurityTube is another great place to check out for videos, but it is (again) not Kali specific. The "Metasploit Megaprimer" videos are quite good.

    hope this helps some,
