Laptop overheats and drains battery even with lid closed

Kali version: Kali Linux 64 bit amd64
Kali installation: USB installed to hard drive

Solutions tried and their result: I've lowered screen brightness

I did not have this problem on windows so I know it's not a hardware issue.

Whenever I'm done with my laptop, I close the lid like I used to do, and when I get back an hour or two later, the bottom of the laptop is super hot and the battery is drained.

I feel like the laptop is not hibernating when the lid is closed?

Next time, when you are done using your computer, click on "root" in the top right corner and select "Shutdown..." A window will pop up. Select "Hibernate." Does your computer still get hot and drain the battery? If not, then you were right and it's not going into hibernation mode. Sorry, but I don't know how to fix that off hand.
