If your apt-get update or apt-get upgrade does not respond after a fresh install of Kali-linux look in the /etc/apt/sources.list file and see if there is a Pound Symbol i.e. # at the beginning of each address. The # symbol turns the text line into a remark or comment and linux ignores the line.
Remove the # symbol and save the file and your apt-get commands should work.
In all our fresh installs of Kali-linux 1.01a all addresses in the source.list file were remarked out.
