    VPN - Kali 2

    Hey all,

I apologize firstly if this is in wrong section, But I'm highly confused on how to get a VPN happening. On the previous version of kali it was so simple to find "vpn" then go to your connection. However I can't find anything like that in the network settings except for network proxy but none of this is beneficial for me. Ive done that apt-get install network-manager-openvpn in hope that the option would appear, however it does not. Am i missing something?

    Cheers all.

    apt-get install network-manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome

    Then, I'm OK.

I haven't met any problem in kali 1.x.x, and I met the similar problem in kali 2.0.
At first, I modified /etc/apt/source.list as follows:
    ## Regular repositories
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
    ## Source repositories
    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
then I run those commands as follows, it's OK.
    apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome
    apt-get install network-manager-strongswan
    apt-get install network-manager-vpnc
    apt-get install network-manager-vpnc-gnome
When I run apt-get install network-manager-pptp and pptp-gnome, it report fault. I search some web Disccuz and modified /etc/apt/source.list
    # kali 2.0's soucelist
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
then run the command: apt-get install network-manager-pptp, It's OK.
    you can try it again!
    good luck!

I'm new to this forum, but I think this might work. You need to clean any downloaded file from before, and then continue with apt-get update.

Assuming you have the correct repo, follow this(without $ sign of course).

    Code:
    $ sudo apt-get clean
    Then.

    Code:
    $ sudo apt-get update
Tell us if it is working.

Kartic, would you mind showing us your repository list. For me, when I chose not to install with Internet connection for the first time setup, I got errors with comments(forgot the error name, wish I could reproduce the error). I later updated my repositories, from kali linux repo. Remove all of the line, or you comment them with "#" for safe. And then, paste these:

    Code:
    # Regular repositories
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
    # Source repositories
    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
These are from official Kali Linux Sana Repo if you're wondering.

    Copy/paste commands:
    Code:
    cat <<EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security/ sana/updates main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security/ sana/updates main contrib non-free
    EOF
    apt-get update
for VPN in openvpn pptp; do
      apt-get -y install network-manager-${VPN} network-manager-${VPN}-gnome
    done
Note, you can replace "for VPN in openvpn pptp; do" to "for VPN in openvpn pptp iodine openconnect vpnc; do" to install all formats of VPN
You need the "network-manager-*-gnome" package if you want to use the GUI network option in "Settings" -> "Network".

    Result:
    Code:
    root@kali:~# cat <<EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list
    > deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    > deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib

    I had a similar issue.

When you use apt-get update it gets the info from your closest mirror. Mine did not have updated info so I had to force to a different mirror.

    swap out the bold section

deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free

with another mirror on the mirror list for that source.

    That worked for me

This is the guide I used to to get pia installed. It added the vpn tab in network manager and added a button in the settings drop down in the top right corner to turn it on and off.

Once configured you will have the quick access buttons via the gnome panel applet mentioned earlier.
