    I think I have the same problem as you;

    I have a SanDisk Ultra 32Gb that I used as a bootable partition for Kali 1.0.1 .

    Before I would;

    - Make a bootable Kali Live USB (Kingston DataTraveler 8gb) with UUI.
    - Boot the Kali Live USB into a graphic installation
    - Install Kali Linux to my SanDisk Ultra as if it were a HD.
    - Install the GRUB boot-loader to my SanDisk ultra.

    The result was a fully functional, 100% persistent, portable version of Kali Linux.
    I used to prefer this method because the USB would boot up clean, without suggesting to boot as a Live USB, forensic mode or (encrypted) persistence mode.
    My USB would simply function as a portable HD and it has always worked great for me.

    Now with Kali Linux 2, this doesn't work anymore. The installer works but the USB simply doesn't boot.
    There is nothing wrong with my USB. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    This is what I did too! Now it also doesn't work... I'm trying to find a solution. My buddy suggested just installing GRUB on my laptop but I'd like to keep it off my HD for now. I want to do encrypted persistence like I had before but I can't even get the **** thing to boot with my new EFI Lenovo and Kali 2. I feel like a noob when I don't think I should be struggling this much with this

    Solution for my issue was that new mobo came with boot set to UEFI only (I assumed it was both..) and I set it to both (durr). I thought Kali 2 would be compatible with newer hardware but I guess not all of it. That doesn't really bother me though. Between this (also affected other *nix) and win 8 hybrid shutdown my new Lenovo seemed like more of a PITA than anything.
