HELP - installing kali on macbook pro through vmware onto a usb

I am able to run kali through vm ware and then install kali onto a usb drive through vmware and graphic install.
I don't get kali in the boot loader menu.

- should i install the grub boot loader?
- if not then how should i get it running?

I need it to be on usb so it is portable.
