Can't get into monitor mode - kali 2.0

I can't get into monitor mode.
Here are my details:

root@kali:~# airmon-ng
PHY Interface Driver Chipset

phy0 wlan0 rt2800pci Ralink corp. RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

When I do

airmon-ng start wlan0

it turns into wlan0mon (when I do

iwconfig

wlan0 is not showing, only wlan0mon) and
the mode stays as managed. I tried killing the interruptin processes, didn't work. I tried using

ifconfig wlan0mon down

and turning mode managed (iwconfig wlan0 mode managed), then doing the same but up (ifconfig... up). And yet nothing worked.
Where can the problem be? I can get to monitor mode in my ubuntu 14.04 (triple boot with both windows 8 and ubuntu).

This seems to be correct. You should be able to use the wlan0mon interface for anything you would like to do in monitor mode.
