Question No gui on new install

I am an experienced user. Just installed Kali 2016.1 and the install went well. It then booted ok to the login screen and accepted my password ok but then just a black screen with a white mouse cursor. I could get to an X screen with ALT-F4 and login again but could not start a gui. I have a standard gigabyte desktop which runs all Debian and Ubuntu variants with no problem. I have NVidia GT7950 which runs fime with Nouveau drivers. The relevant part of syslog below, hope this helps and thanks:

if it takes you to console login screen .. try logging in and using the gnome-3 command .. hit tab for option and it should load the gnome interface

Same issue here. Any fixes out there? Multiple people having the issue, but some obviously aren't. Running on a VM. Anyone?
