Troubles upgrading and installing new software

    Hi all,

Bit of a newbie here. I recently installed Kali on a Dell INspirion Mini, and when I do apt-get upgrade I get this:

    root@Anon:~# sudo apt-get upgrade
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
    openjdk-7-jdk openjdk-7-jre openjdk-7-jre-headless
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

Also when I go to get things like Tor, Pidgin or Hashacat (I stupidly purged it) it gives me one of these:
    root@Anon:~# sudo apt-get download hashcat
E: Unable to locate package hashcat
    root@Anon:~# sudo apt-get download tor
E: Can't select candidate version from package tor as it has no candidate
    root@Anon:~# sudo apt-get download pidgin
E: Can't select candidate version from package pidgin as it has no candidate
    root@Anon:~#

Help? About a month ago I was able to do this on a live boot.. and get it all. Now none of it works....

First of all you are upto-date as you can see - and JDK will not upgrade as it consumes more space and you have to execute JDK and then --update in JDK console

second you are using apt-get command worngly

ex:to install hashcat the command is apt-get install oclhashcat oclhashcat-plus
not apt-get install hashcat , in some you have to mention the build number also along with the application to install

    Alright,

I also ran into an issue with Kali 2016.1.. I install it, and attempted to boot, and it bring me to a terminal to log in, then stays in the terminal.
    any way to fix this?

    I get

    -bash: startx: command not found.

Also the mouse cursor randomly jumps around in the Termial and only allows typing during a split second of it disappearing.

    Update:
my mouse finally stopped being weird, But my GUI is still not appearing. One of my buddies, who is a long time linux user, said it could be drivers. Dell has no other drivers for this computer (Dell Inspirion 10 1010)
Does anybody know if Kali Rolling has them? Kali 2.0 does, but I would like to get 2016.1 on here before the EOL on 2.0... I have tried startx, gdm3, and fsck- fsck ends up being a lot of failure messages.
