    Kali Linux Rolling NVIDIA Problem

Hello Need Help! Urgent! its KILLING ME :-(

First of all I am a bit new to Linux systems.
I got an old laptop a 32bit system. and had the idea of installing Kali Linux Rolling to it.
I got it installed properly without any problems
Then the VGA quality was a bit slow ect compared to windows I had earlier
So I I wanted to install NVIDIA drivers for it.
I tried going through almost all types of forums ect ended up getting failed results which ended up keeping on installing and updating the system all over and over again please help me with this.

    The main procedure I followed

    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade
    apt-get install*-y*linux-headers-$(uname*-r)
    apt-get install*nvidia-kernel-dkms

    sed*'s/quiet/quiet nouveau.modeset=0/g'*-i*/etc/default/grub
    update-grub
    reboot

I ended up getting Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can’t recover please log out and try again. Tried rebooting again many times but didn’t help. It is displayed in the pictures I have attached.

    IMG_2310.jpg
    IMG_2311.jpg

    and the Final Error is
    IMG_2307.jpg

I also tried to download the exact driver from Geforce.com
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/95153
and followed there instruction. Also I had my nouveau driver blacklisted. Then after booting at login screen it started to flicker continuously.

Trust me I’ve tried all the methods available in forums but ended up with same result.
I have also tried this as well
    http://www.blackmoreops.com/2014/03/...er-kali-linux/

also I have reported in kali-linux bug tracker. But still no response at all
    https://bugs.kali.org/view.php?id=3130

One thing I noticed was after installing nvidia drivers and get the white screen error. The graphics were pretty smoother and responsive than before.

    My specs are mentioned bellow.

Having this issue with a similar card.

I have the same problem with the graphics. Similar card on a dell xps m1210. Any luck on getting it to work or any answers found anywhere?

I have a NVIDIA 1070 card. Unfortunately the Kali repository doesn't have the latest driver available yet. I'm hoping that they will fix that soon enough with a debian/repo update.

With that said, to get the graphics to work I booted into recovery mode, then init 3'd to a CLI with networking, I updated everything with apt-get and the apt-get purged nvidia*. Once I did that I mounted a USB drive with the correct driver from nvidia and everything worked flawlessly. Perhaps give that a try. It appears the specific driver you need is:
    Version: 304.131
    Release Date: 2015.11.16
    Operating System: Linux 64-bit
    Language: English (US)
    File Size: 66.2 MB

    @Nik
Hi, you see the oops because there is no xorg.conf file. The drivers as of late do not create one. Running nvidia-xconfig after the driver install will create one *but* this is not the end of your woes. If you're lucky you can get by. However, the latest kali rolling has major issues with the latest mobos and GeForce cards especially. The implementation of some bios'es has a bug, but not really their fault as the Intel spec is vague for implementers. Some linux distros like Ubuntu have resolved it, but minor ones like kali are lagging behind by about a year on this one. There are issues with the GPU Memory mapping and also the PCIe kernel code has bugs in it too.

So follow the guide as you did, and run nvidia-xconfig afterwards. If you reboot and get a flashing cursor with no gnome nor the ability to tty1-3 then you've hit the kernel issue. There is no fix for this as of yet, other than patching the kernel manually. I must admit I tried it and got working for all but 5 minutes, after that I consigned kali rolling to the bin. I needed to get up and running quickly so instead installed ubuntu and ran kali in a virtualbox. The virtualbox approach will not give you access to cuda, so push your password cracking to a desktop somewhere else...you'll want to do that anyway as it sucks battery and will top you out from full to empty in about an hour. Your specs suggest a laptop, so no doubt it is the same issue.

    Good luck.

from other post. i read this ..

I had a similar problem with Kali rolling 2016.2 with Nvidia GTX 1070. I could not boot into in using recovery options or regular boot. I got it to boot by using the Kali live failsafe mode on the DVD.
I then set up a chroot environment in a terminal sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt, sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev, sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc, sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys, sudo chroot /mnt In the chroot environment, I ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) and ran NVIDIA-Linux-X86_64-367.35.run that I had previous placed in the root directory with chmod +x to change permissions. I agreed to the EULA, and the other questions. It installed the NVIDIA drivers. I exited out of chroot and quit the live DVD.
I was able to boot into Kali from the hard drive.

    somebody has tried?

I am subscribing to this thread to follow the progress of this issue. I have tried all of the above methods to no avail. I am hoping that this issue will get solved soon and that a detailed response will be posted in this thread. If I figure anything out on my end I will post it here as well.

What specific graphics card do you have? As I stated previously you should be able to get the system to work if you install the correct driver with nvidia installer after removing the nvidia debian packages. That's how I got it to work as a temporary fix. Only problem is I was unable to get CUDA to work due to removing the debian package.

I've got a GeForce GTX 970m. I tried that, but I need CUDA for a project I'm working on.

This issue comes up a lot when you have a laptop with discrete graphics. You might be able to use something like HybridGraphics but you have to use the open source drivers, the official nvidia ones won't work (I think).

I wish I would have found this thread before I set out to install the drivers. Now all I get is the gray error screen and I can no longer login to kali. Did I basically just brick my OS or is there a way to reverse it until this issue gets resolved?

By the way, I am running a GTX 970M

Update: I hope this was not the wrong way to go about it, but from the recovery terminal, here is what I did...

    apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
    reboot

After this, Kali boots back up. Now, on to a fix for gpu driver issue.

I thank Kali Forum "search" for getting me here... I was going to start a thread like this but I'd rather add to this one.
I g0ogled up this kali doc page: docs.kali.org/general-use/install-nvidia-drivers-on-kali-linux
and I was VERY EXCITED thinking I'd get my Geforce GTX 980 up 100%, but all it did was brick my box.
    PLEASE SOMEBODY SOLVE THIS. Thanks!

I have the same problem, bricked 6 installations now when trying to install nVIDIA drivers
    I have a HP Omen

    Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ (2,6 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 kärnor)
    43,9 cm (17,3 tum) LED - FHD IPS (1 920 x 1 080)
    16 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
    256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ SSD + 1 TB SATA
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M (4 GB dedikerat GDDR5)

And I will get insta death if I try to install any nVIDIA driver at all.
I'm not sure what the problem is but it may have something to do with my laptop choosing the Intel graphic card instead of the nVIDIA one when switching out the open source nVIDIA driver or soemthing like that. It's pretty annoying since now I can't make full use of my nVIDIA card.

My problem is that I have dual cards, one Intel HD and one Nvidia that is used when gaming etc.
To make my setup work I have to install Bumblebee and after that Nvidia CUDA then I have access to my Nvidia using optirun.

But if I try any other installation it crash and fail totally.

Awesome. I am not the only one with issues. I am kinda new in linux, and i am trying to install the *right* drivers for my new computer. I have a GeForce-GTX-1080-Ti-GAMING-X-11G..
    https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/Ge...#hero-overview

But i have not managed to install the drivers. If someone can help me out i would really really really appreciate it!
    What driver should i use???
    Could this one work?
    http://www.nvidia.com/download/drive...x/118290/en-us

It's a msi card, but it might not matter. It's my first gaming computer, and i want to try and play in linux, but because i am a begginer i am taking small steps right now.
Also, do i need to install sound card drivers and every driver in linux? I thought linux was out of the box supported. It might be, but i want my graphic card drivers anyways...
The rest, cpu, sound, motherboard is supported in linux right? if not, i have misunderstood linux, and it might be "somewhat" like windows...
    Thanks!

Hi all. I have had this same issue for a few weeks now and like you all, I had no luck whatsoever in any of my searches. Running a desktop with a GTX 980.

That is until today. I was at the point where I was getting the "OOPS Something went wrong" message. It was even difficult for me to get to command line w/ Ctrl+ALT+F2 because the screen kept flashing so much.

Anyway, onto what fixed it for me. I had seen a lot of links going to Blackmoreops(https://www.blackmoreops.com/2014/03...-kali-linux/3/) and at a few points I went through the steps, usually ran into problems at the usual places. I read the comments starting from the most recent and came across a comment made at the end of January 2017. My experience in red.
    ---------------------------------------------
Make sure your Kali Linux system is up to date:
    apt-get clean && apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
    Install the kernel headers:
apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r) My response came back that the headers were already at the newest version. Edit: Ran again for shits and giggles on a fresh install and got the "could not find package" so I ran a apt-cache search linux-headers and toward the top of the output was the most recent version number and ran that: apt-get install -y linux-headers-4.12.0-kali1-amd64. Once that header installed, it all went as planned.

If you get errors like alreza jj:

Couldn’t find any package whose name or description matched “linux-headers-3.14-kali1-amd64”

make sure that the correct sources for Kali packages are referenced in /etc/apt/sources.list and that you are connected to the internet.Only had the sources listed on the kali site

Download the nVidia driver for your graphics card and save it in a location convenient to you (e.g. your home directory).I only tried 375.66 Edit: 384.69 did work as well.
    Blacklist the nouveau driver:
make sure you have a file called “nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf” inside of [/etc/modprobe.d/]. If it’s not there, create it and paste inside…
    blacklist nouveau
    options nouveau modeset=0
Enter the following commands in a terminal as root:
    sed ‘s/quiet/quiet nouveau.modeset=0/g’ -i /etc/default/grub
    update-grub
update-initramfs think I had to add a -u onto this command
    reboot
If you face the login screen after reboot, do not log in but change to a terminal with Ctrl+ALT+F2.At this point I was still not able to get to a GUI login
Log in to the terminal as root.
    Kill GDM:
    service gdm3 stop
    Remove all nVidia related stuff:
    apt-get purge nvidia-*
Navigate to the directory you downloaded the nVidia driver to.
Make sure the driver installer (*.run) is executable:
    chmod +x NVidia…run
Start the nVidia driver installer and follow the instructions on the screen. Let it configure your X server.
Reboot again. You should now be fine
    ------------------------------------------------

I did a jig when it came up to the GUI login and I cheered when it actually got to the desktop. I was also able to do a nvidia-smi and I could do hashcat benchmarks to prove to me it was working.

One thing that did change between today and a few days ago is that I noticed a dist-upgrade today brought my kernel to 4.12 whereas a few days ago it would only upgrade to 4.11. Not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

Anyway, sorry for the long post and the rambling... just so f'n happy right now. Weeks I have been workin on this.

I hope this helps someone. Good luck all^^

Well it helped a lot...I followed your post and downloaded nvidia-384-69 driver from Nvidia site but when i tried to install it wouldn't let me...(Something about headers drm all kinds of problems) what i did was:
First i downloaded Nvidia file to root dir :nvidia-384-69.run (77Mb) --------not exact name !!!

    apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y && apt-get dist-upgrade -y
    apt-get install -y linux-headers-4.12.0-kali1-amd64
    apt install -y ocl-icd-libopencl1 nvidia-driver nvidia-cuda-toolkit
    update-grub
    update-initramfs
    reboot

DONT PANIC After "oh no something went wrong" screen i pressed Ctrl+alt+F2 then proceeded to Kill GDM:

    service gdm3 stop
    Removed all nVidia related stuff:
    apt-get purge nvidia-*

Navigate to the directory you downloaded the nVidia driver to.(preferably root)

    chmod +x nvidia-384-69.run
    sh ./nvidia-384-69.run
    it created file nvidia-384-69-custom.run

    chmod +x nvidia-384-69-custom.run
Start the nVidia driver installer and follow the instructions on the screen. Let it configure your X server.
    ./nvidia-384-69-custom.run
    update-grub
    update-initramfs

Reboot again. You should now be fine
