Primary Partition too Small for Updates

Not a hard drive ninja, so not really sure what to do. I can't update && upgrade Kali because it fails 3/4 of the way through saying there's not enough space.
Used a freshly formatted 16 GB USB drive to get image on and used the Win32 ISO-USB tool they "recommend".
What you get with that is a 2.66Gb primary partition, 84Mb FAT partition and every bit of other space is 'unallocated'.
Trying to update the install runs out of space. Suggestions?
