i've attempted to clean (apt clean), delete /var/lib/apt/lists/* and recleaned and updated once again, but continue to get the error.

Any ideas?

For what it's worth, same results and same attempted resolutions here....

There's another post on the installing Kali forums describing the same problems with a VM download. Maybe the repos are under maintenance?
