apt-get update , apt-upgrade and OS configurations can work in LiveUSB?

I have installed kali (Kali Linux 64 bit Mate) in a USB and works well. I can modify all the settings I want and make apt-get update and apt-get upgrade but when I restart the system all the work done gets lost. I followed this tutorial https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/kali-...up-marco-rossi to obtain a persistent partition, and although I can save files in it, it does not seem to save the rest of things like the keyboard settings, updates ... etc At start also I select the persistent mode but still not working.
Anyone can help me how about to do this? Is it possible to do?

    Thanks and best regards

It is not recommended to use it this way. However there is one thing that you can do. Make another live kali usb drive and partition the current drive and install kali on the usb. In this way everything will work out great. Hope it helped.
