Settings | Users Appears then Vanishes

In All Settings, when I click on Users, it flashes quickly on the screen and then the whole All Settings (including Users) disappears. The applet just stops.

I installed this (latest rolling) from ISO in a VMware VM about two weeks ago. I've since updated it according to the Kali blog instructions for installing native VMware tools. I've also installed

• Notepadqq
• PuTTY

according to their instructions for the 'automatic' smooth installations (all dependencies and libraries). But I haven't done any other 'tweaks' because I'm still learning.

Any ideas as to why the Users applet stopped working?

As an update:

1. I forgot to mention that I rebooted at least once to see if there was something that got 'stuck'.
2. When I went to shut it down the last time yesterday, it stopped for 2min and showed that it was trying to stop a process for Users, but I didn't get the precise info. But it was interesting to see that it had apparently loaded something, just no longer showed it on the GUI.
