Kali 2017?
I've had a lot of trouble installing Kali 2016.2, so instead of spending the rest of my life trying to get an old installer to work, I wanted to try my luck with a newer image:
What is the actual status of Kali 2017, to the extent that it means anything for a rolling distro

Kali 2017.1 is yet to be released. I'm sure it will come with kernel version 10 which is released first for CentOS and linux mint. Kernel 4.10 is more advanced with hardware failure codes and it must have been released for debian also but it may take sometime to release in kali. It can also be in testing phase.
You can use kali weekly images. Those bugs are not related with its functioning and they are patched every week.

I just wanted to chime here to let you know that we are planning a Kali 2017 official release in late April or early May, then more consistent releases to follow.

Linux kali 4.6.0-kali1-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.6.4-1kali1 (2016-07-21) i686 GNU/Linux
does that mean kali 4.6 is based on debian 4.6 (wheezy) not debian 8 jessie?

4.6 is the kernel version. It is outdated.
