    Unknown Display

Hey guys, I just plugged tried my live kali linux usb in a new laptop I got--a hp 15-ay103dx, and it won't let me set the resolution any higher than 640 * 480 (or less). Which is really annoying because the screen is so small I can't see the bottom of most applications. The resolution that my screen should be set at is 1366 * 768. I've followed this tutorial : https://anhe51.wordpress.com/2012/01...-ubuntu-11-10/ but the first command it says to put, xrandr, returns an error:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

    and then this:

    Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 640 x 480, maximum 640 x 480
    default connected primary 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm
    640x480 0.00*

Every command that uses xrandr returns the same error. I have just barely put in 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade' so everything is up to date. Is there any way just to force the screen resolution? I've looked online, but everyone is using xrandr, which doesn't work for me. If you guys have any idea on how to fix it please let me know. Thanks
