You need to make sure the kernel headers are installed....
Did you have any errors when running
    Code:
     sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
    ?
And, just checking, you are doing this with a hard drive installed Kali or a Persistence Kali which is working properly?
I had issues with the Kali Live from the standard repository; had to download the weekly build. But don't do that yet. It might not be your problem.
Is it a functioning Kali Live with Persistence which you are trying to install the driver for?

I don't think Kali has linux-headers-generic. I can"t see it anyway. You will need to work out which kernel you are running
    Code:
    uname -r
and then install the headers for that kernel.
    Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-4.12.0-kali1-686 [FOR EXAMPLE]
    Hopefully this will work.
I could be wrong here. Can you check whether you have kernel headers installed? Do let me know if I'm on the wrong track.

    Kali doesn't use generic headers.
The require command in kali is sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

The one you mentioned is also same.

    generic-headers are available for ubuntu
