Just starting - again - and am stuck.

It has been a LONG time since I first got Kali, so I decided to get a new build.

This problem was around with the original build too - I seem to remember.

How on earth do you read PDF files?

I searched and was pointed to getting a PDF reader from adobe.

Went through the motions, and the application was not there. So that was waste of time.

I get that there are instructions on the machine, but they are a bit ...... I dunno. I have things like "Kali for dummies"
    Actually this is the list:
    Kali linux handbook (PDF)
Kali linux Web penetration testing cookbook (PDF)
    Kali book (PDF)
    Kali linux commands (PDF)
    Kali linux tutorial (PDF)
Pact Kali Linux Cookbook (Oct 2013) (PDF)

Kinda difficult to rad them if Kali doesn't come with a PDF viewer.

I also remember something about changing the "default user" and password. That's kind of an obvious thing to do.

    But how?
I'm guessing it will be explained in one of the PDF files I can't read/open in Kali.

Having only one monitor it also complicates running two machines side by side.

    Anyone - please?

Browsers also read pdf files so i don't think any dedicated software is required for it. I open pdf with Firefox.

Strange. Kali has Evince document viewer for PDF.

I use Nautilus to locate a PDF, double-klick on the file, voila!

The Kali book mentioned apt-get or Synaptic to look for packages:

    apt-cache search pdf

    Ok, so indulge this:
    root@kali:~# Evince
    bash: Evince: command not found
    root@kali:~#

    Try small letters in terminal

    "evince -h" works fine here.

weird. There must be something wrong with your version of Kali. I have most (if not all) of those books on my system and I can view them without any moding or extra installs to Kali.

Kali that I use has document viewer. Also if you used the 32bit download of pdf viewer like it says in those instructions, you might need a 64bit version sounds like you got a fairly large set up. Try 64bit package pdf viewer for the rest of those instruction.
