I have changed SWAPINESS to 0 as I have ample memory but that is all I have done so far. Any suggestions or links will be helpful as most of the information I have found so far online is out dated and this is the 3rd install I have done of the operating system.

    Kind regards

What do you mean slow? I own a Lenova Thinkpad 32bit that I boot Kali with just for practice and it works off the bat. If you mean you want the programs in Kali to work faster or Kali itself is slow?

Kali boot is great but once I get into the OS it starts to slow down. Please know that I am new to Linux and Kali more so I did run Ubuntu on this laptop before but it didn't have the utilities I required for my project and a lad in class said to load Kali. For an instance if I open Firefox it and search web page while I have terminal open I keep getting a web page not responding message also the system hangs periodically the mouse works you can see the curser moving but you can't click on anything on the home screen, thankfully that is few and far between.

I looked for information online and have installed this OS 3 times now due some of the how too guides either making my screen completely blank ( I read somewhere that I needed to install Nvidia drivers for my GPU ) etc etc. I am guessing I made rookie mistake. For the record I am a first year network management student and using the system to test a project I am building for class.

Might be your RAM. Looks like whom ever you bought it from tried to upgrade the memory. Because from what I can tell you laptop is only 16gb ddr3 max. But only ships out of box with 4gb you have 12gb. Sometime you need to configure your bios to reconize extra RAM. Look at LENOVA for bios upgrade. Not really a Kali thing.
