    Kali Rolling can't connect to external display. How do I troubleshoot it?

    Hello.

    The screen is connected to an HDMI port on my laptop through an adaptor (the screen is not HDMI-capable). The same screen works fine with Windows.

    There's a key on my keyboard to change screen, it just says 'No external display'.

    Possibly Nvidia drivers are making this issue? I have tried several methods to install Nvidia proprietary drivers, none of them seem to work. Either being completely unable to boot (had to use rescue image), or boots to command-line interface only.

    Have you checked the logs to see if there is anything wrong? dmesg, syslog, Xorg logs?

    Have you tried plugging the screen before booting?

    Try command
    xrandr
    To see if both monitor is presented on system.
    In Kali with xfce I used two monitors, one with HDMI output, just need to set in Seasons and Startup to be permanent change.
    My graphic card is Ati radeon.

    As I see there is only one monitor, not two. Probably the problem is in your graphic card and driver for Linux.
    Read one of this articles and I'm thinkig it will be helpfull

    Agree, am also using an HDMI to VGA adapter on a notebook and XRANDR shows two monitors, eDP-1 (internal) and HDMI-1
