TL-WN722N wifi adaptor not associating with AP from Kali-2018.2

    Hi,

Some assistance if you would, please.
Yes, I have searched long and hard before coming to this forum.

    Specs:

Running Windows 10 Home on a Lenovo Ideapad, CPU Intel i5-8250U, 8Gb RAM.

    VirtualBox 5.2.14 r123301

    Kali & linux versions:
    Kali-Linux-2018.2-vbox-amd64
    4.15.0-kali2-amd64 GNU/Linux
    Version 5.2.8 r120774 '5.2.8_Debian

Unable to get my TP-WN722N wifi adaptor to work/access the internet. The adaptor light flashes during Kali startup and the USB icon on screen displays the red dot. When Kali has completed startup, the red dot disappears, no green dot.

My Kali Network Settings - is attached to NAT with default settings. I also played around with Bridged Adaptor and selected by TN-W722N in the Name drop-down box, but resulted in the same failure.

    iwconfig gives me:
    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 unassociated ESSID:"" Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"
    Mode:Managed Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Sensitivity:0/0
    Retryff RTS thrff Fragment thrff
    Encryption keyff
    Power Managementff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

    lo no wireless extensions.

My TP-WN722N adaptor is attached via USB2.0.
I have installed the Windows 10 driver, and the adaptor works fine outside of Kali. The machine also runs an Atheros Qualcomm QCA9377 Wireless Network Adaptor card.

It gets interesting when I run dmesg, but I'm not experienced enough to understand ...

What additional information can I provide?

Help me Obi-Wan Kanobis, you're my only hope!

    Thanks in advance, Natalia

    1. Make sure you have the virtualbox extensions and USB is configured as 2.0 on the VM settings
    2. The internal card doesn't matter, it cannot be attached to the VM. It's a limitation of virtualbox and other desktop virtualization tools
    3. Update Kali, it might help solve the problem: apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot
    4. Does the card work when using it on Windows itself?

    Hello Mister_X

    Thank you for your response.

    1. Yes, extensions are installed and the USB is configured in Kali VM settings for 2.0
    2. ok, good to learn
    3. I have run the updates, upgrades and reboot - connectivity issue remains
    4. Yes the card works through Windows (10)

What additional details can I send to help diagnosis?

    Thanks in advance,
    N
