upgrade fails because of antivirus

good evening, i'm quite new to Kali, but i'm experiencing this frustrating issue both with the last 2019 release (installed on VirtualBox from the .iso) and the first 2020 release (deployed with the .ova): everytime i try the sequence

>apt-get update
>apt-get upgrade

the second starts but exits without upgrading because some packets are impossible to download due to the antivirus blocking some source IP.

Should the update follow a different procedure?
Is it possible to shut down/pause the antivirus? I cannot find how to manage the antivirus.

apparently yes. I did a standard install and there is an "antivirus" running. I actually don't know which one and how to disable it.
