Johntheripper 'john' Command Not Found

So I am using Kali Linux on a VirtualBox VM just in case that maybe makes a difference and logged in using the kali user.

When I run the john command I just get command not found.
I looked around a lot I can't seem to find any solution.

Any suggestions would be very helpful thanks!

P.s. I am quite new to Kali so possible this is a very newbie mistake I overlooked!

Are you using root account ?

if not, John requires root priveleges.

I'm using the Kali, login and password as I am sure that has root privileges since its the only preset account now, maybe I'm wrong though?
If so how would I give myself root privileges
