Upgraded to 2020.1 now can't login to Ghome

    Hi all,

I recently updated Kali linux for first time in about 4 months the other day via apt-get update &&upgrade which upgraded me to kali 2020.1 from the previous version. When I went to login It would not let me do so with Gnome or x11 only with Gnome classic which I never used on my kali machine. When I try to log into Gnome it comes up with a big white screen and the ''oh no something went wrong!'' message and a logout option. Not sure what has occurred here anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Hello,

I had the same problem yesterday with my client. What I did to fix it was just go into recovery mode. Then connect to an internet connection (Google on how to) and updated my client by running the command apt get update and then apt get upgrade ...then reboot your device and it should be good to go.

    Regards.

I've been running Kali on a system for quite a while. Today, I decided to go ahead and install updates.
After, that booting fails at a point where it says GNOME is not started.
I have found several hits that match my problem, but none work. For example, several say to run
"apt --fix-broken install". That fails with message:
    wine32 : Depends:libwine (= 4.0.2-1) but 2.0.2-1 is to be installed.
Not sure what this means. I've tried other commands mentioned, but they all fail with the same
message, but different modules are listed depending on the command I ran.
Does this mean that version 4.0.2-1 is currently installed, but version 2.0.2-1 is going to be
    installed?

Some mention to install lightdm, but that fails with very similar messages.
I guess the GUI can't start?

    Any other ideas out there?

It seems the root of my problem has something to do with that message I get about
wine32 and libwine dependencies. I get that message as a result of several commands
I run to try and fix this.

I really don't want to got through another fresh Kali installation.

    Thanks.

Thanks for this, and other comments; I've done lots of searching, and your suggestionis one of many that I have tried
still, no affect. At boot it just hangs the GNOME started message.

For what it's worth, whenever I run apt-get upgrade I get a message:You might want to run apt --fix-broken install,
followed by: ...unmet dependencies, wine32 : Depends: libwine (= 4.02.-1) but 2.0.2-1 is installed.
When I run apt --fix-broken install I get the same error as above about wine32/libwine...

I've done lots of searches, and tried pretty much everything suggested but boot still ends up
    the same; GNOME started

Any other thoughts, suggestions out there?

    Thanks again.
