Gnome won't login after update to 2020.1

Hi all,
I haven't updated my kali for about 4 months and finally did so with apt-get update && upgrade . After it updated to 2020.1 it now will not login to either gnome or x11 and just goes to the white ''oops something went wrong'' screen. Yet strangely it will allow me to login via Gnome classic.

Not sure what is going on, can anybody help me? as it would be much appreciated.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Had to start in recovery mode and update to the new Kali desktop.

What commands did you run? Did you just log in thru terminal as root?
