trying to prep for a ctf and hitting a lot of barriers getting my old wireless card working

So first off, I'm told commands like ifconfig don't exist. Some Googling showed debian changed some of the commands? I ran sudo apt install net tools to get the old ones back to use older tutorials w no luck.

Second, I have been unable to find an up to date guide on how / if my wireless card (an Alfa AWUS051NH v.2 according to the back) working.

Does anyone have any pointers/guidance? So far all I've done is go into usb settings and enable

(This is all in VMware, the host being macOS, and airport can't do monitor mode)

Due to the pandemic I can't just ship a known good card, so hoping to work with the spare parts around my apt to try to self learn during all this

(Planning to do some basic stuff like try to crack my guest network's **** pw etc)

TBH I tried hard to find a resource but lot was outdated + can't run the commands so feeling pretty defeated

    Stay safe everyone

This is a handy cheat sheet for net-tools replacements

Wifi support is all about the chipset. Use tools like lshw, lspci, lsusb, etc. to get the information and google for the chipset, kali, and injection

The best resources about using Kali for pentesting and CTF are:
