Did a fresh install of the current 64 bit AMD .ova file and setup USB and network. I'm still a newbie but right after a boot dmesg and iwconfig look OK. Then run Fern and no access points found. wlan0 is now wlan0mon but airodump-ng also doesn't see any access points. I know the USB Alfa device is good as I can get to work with my old laptop and there are access points to find. I'm sure I'm just looking right past the source of the problem but what is it?
P.S. - I ordered a AWUS036HNA today.
